Weekend Reads
A weekly letter on teaching and learning that I write for the faculty of San Francisco Bay University.

Weekend Reads from CEPI is a letter on teaching and learning. CEPI, the Center for Empowerment and Pedagogical Innovation, sends it to SFBU faculty every Friday. I lead CEPI and write the series for my colleagues.
Each edition takes one teaching problem and works through it with research from the scholarship of teaching and learning. It ends with a practice that faculty can try in their own classes the next week.
The series also has a growing group of readers outside SFBU. This archive opens the letters to the public. Each edition appears here in the form it was sent to faculty.
The archive holds the editions from September 2026 onward. Earlier editions will be added.

The Final Assignment, Reimagined
What if the arrival of AI is an invitation to ask more of our students?

The Arrangement of Attention
What twenty students can learn from each other depends on how we ask them to share a room.

Home Countries in the Classroom
Every student in the room can now start the discussion from the country they know best.

Trapped by Content
In 2011, three researchers at the University of British Columbia set up a contest between two ways of teaching.

Building Connection, Choice, and Trust
With higher education’s attention pulled toward AI, one part of our work can slip out of view.
